This is another letter written by the above member:

"I am glad you prepared that letter to help MDs. It underscores what I have felt for a
long time.  After all, I teach these guys and I know what they know.  As far as alcoholism
is concerned, most of them with a few exceptions, know very little indeed.   I have
experienced this personally as have many of the alcoholic community.

(He joined us in early 2005 and now does not drink.)

"Its pretty sad when you realize that alcoholism was declared a disease in 1955 and now 50
years later today it is still being judged on a moral basis, and this applies to many MDs as well.

"An important point is that 75% of physicians receive no formal training or education in
alcohol and substance abuse disorders.
We have no education programs on alcohol at our
medical school despite alcohol abuse being the
third leading cause of death and is
responsible for 35-40% of all hospital admissions.

"If you go to the
Alcohol Medical Scholars Program, you get a good view of the alcohol
abuse state of the art most Medical Schools refuse to teach.  If an MD can't write a
prescription and "fix it" themselves, they don't want to hear about it.   I talked to a
psychiatrist (MD) last week who openly admitted she
does not deal with alcoholics- it
required too much monitoring!
I walked away.  As I said, if they can't fix it then they don't
want to deal with it!

"People have to think seriously about what the Medical Community has to offer in the
area of alcoholism. Unfortunately, most people are too impaired to think clearly when the
time comes for them to seek help and, as you point out, they are easily frustrated by their
inability to stop or cut down.

"Furthermore, it is a obvious truism that most physicians are extremely arrogant.

"The negative reaction Alcoholism Cure has received from some physicians is just
another example of the principle of "contempt prior to investigation."   Bill Wilson
(founder of Alcoholics Anonymous) complained of it long ago when people were
skeptical of AA.

"All patients need to be queried closely about their alcohol use (or use of other
substances) and this is simply not done.
(Our note to you.  Did your MD?)

"In my own case, I have spent a lot of time and money getting some of my personal
ailments treated correctly by MDs. If I did not have the background and insights that I have,
I myself would have gone through any number of useless procedures, including surgical
operations, and would have lost a couple organs.  I find that it is absolutely essential that
one must take charge of one's own medical management, MDs are very often dead wrong.
Multiple opinions are critical. Its why we pay so much to physicians so they can pay
their malpractice insurance premiums.

"Even with respect to published diagnostic and treatment procedures for any number
of diseases, its quite clear that what is practiced at the University levels by the Clinical
Professors takes an average of five years or more to filter down to the private
practitioners. Indeed, in science in general, it takes a long time to get new and innovative
concepts accepted. NIH is not interested in funding new concepts, they want to most of
the basiv work on a science project to be done before they will support funding.

"So its not surprising you get this attitude; I have dealt with it for years, its very
disappointing. It reflects a close-minded attitude by people who are supposed to be
educated and who for the most part
keep up to date on how to practice medicine by
information from drug salespeople
and what's in the Medical Letter.  Most
physicians are definitely not scientists, far from it, but they certainly are territorial.
 Most
professionals in the Substance Abuse field on the other hand are far more open minded.
The view I get from them, is "for God's sake, try anything that works!!"

"Even with respect to published diagnostic and treatment procedures for any number of
diseases, its quite clear that
what is practiced at the University levels by the Clinical
Professors takes an average of five years or more to filter down to the MDs.

"A good example of this is the use of therapeutic head-out water immersion. We have
studied immersion physiology for years.   Water baths are used widely throughout Europe
and Japan for therapy.  Immersion is an excellent method for causing salt and water
elimination in pregnancy.   Salt and water can be eliminated via immersion of the mother
without having to give drugs that affect the fetus.  However, simply sitting in a warm
bathtub for 20 minutes, is not promoted by physicians here in the US, primarily because
its a procedure they can't bill for.

"I hope your letter will help educate a lot of MDs."
Testimonial from long term, hard drinking son of a long line of alcoholics
He has been with us since June 2005.  Twice he has had some backsliding and we were able to
bring him back to his cure each time.

His story graphically demonstrates the importance of our continued support long past the time
drinking first comes under control.

Hi Doug,

"I haven't had the need to contact you because as you can see life is good.  I have had no
drinks, nor any desire to drink.   I learned from the last episode in December that I have to
take the pills otherwise I am liable to relapse.
(ed note: Many members can stop pills
except in times of stress.  This man’s family history of alcoholism is extreme.  The surprise
he was able to Social Drink without daily pills for a period of time.)
My last relapse was
pretty bad and I had difficulty working my way out of it so no way do I want to get in that
situation again.     I continue to teach and enjoy it so much more without the booze
hanging over my head.   Moreover, my doc says I am healthier than he has ever seen me.
Big celebration the last time I visited my physician because my BP was 120/80.   I haven't
had those numbers for a long long time.

"I (still) go to AA a couple times a week to be with sober long time friends and I spread
the word about The Foundation when the opportunity presents itself.   Although I have
tried to interest (his university’s alcoholism researchers) they are not very responsive.
Although they say they welcome new advances, they are very protective of anything that
might infringe on their turf or ingrained ideas.  I did contact Mothers against Drunk Driving
on your behalf, but likewise I received no response.

"I hope to be speaking with our new Medical School Dean who may be receptive to your
programs.  I am going to be more open about the disease of Alcoholism. There is still
an attitude of not talking about addiction, even in the Med School that is difficult to
overcome.  I myself talk about alcoholism to medical students, dental students and
undergraduates whenever it is appropriate.
