From John A. Krasney, MD, PhD, Senior Professor,
University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical
Sciences - who helps decide which medical research gets funding.
"An important point is that 75% of physicians receive no formal training or
education in alcohol and substance abuse disorders. We have no education
programs on alcohol at our medical school despite alcohol abuse being the third
leading cause of death and is responsible for 35-40% of all hospital admissions.
"If you go to the Alcohol Medical Scholars Program, you get a good view of the alcohol
abuse state of the art most Medical Schools refuse to teach. If an MD can't write a
prescription and "fix it" themselves, they don't want to hear about it. I talked to a
psychiatrist (MD) last week who openly admitted she does not deal with alcoholics- it
required too much monitoring! I walked away. As I said, if they can't fix it then they
don't want to deal with it!
"People have to think seriously about what the Medical Community has to offer in the area
of alcoholism. Unfortunately, most people are too impaired to think clearly when the
time comes for them to seek help and, as you point out, they are easily frustrated
by their inability to stop or cut down.
"The negative reaction Alcoholism Cure has received from some physicians is just another
example of the principle of "contempt prior to investigation." Bill Wilson (founder of
Alcoholics Anonymous) complained of it long ago when people were skeptical of AA.
"In my own case, I have spent a lot of time and money getting some of my personal
ailments treated correctly by MDs. If I did not have the background and insights that I have,
I myself would have gone through any number of useless procedures, including
surgical operations, and would have lost a couple organs. I find that it is absolutely
essential that one must take charge of one's own medical management, MDs are very
often dead wrong. Multiple opinions are critical. Its why we pay so much to physicians so
they can pay their malpractice insurance premiums.
"Even with respect to published diagnostic and treatment procedures for any number of
diseases, its quite clear that what is practiced at the University levels by the Clinical
Professors takes an average of five years or more to filter down to the private practitioners.
Indeed, in science in general, it takes a long time to get new and innovative concepts
accepted. NIH is not interested in funding new concepts, they want to most of the basic
work on a science project to be done before they will support funding.
"So its not surprising you get this attitude; I have dealt with it for years, its very
disappointing. It reflects a close-minded attitude by people who are supposed to be educated
and who for the most part keep up to date on how to practice medicine by
information from drug salespeople and what's in the Medical Letter. Most physicians
are definitely not scientists, far from it, but they certainly are territorial. Most
professionals in the Substance Abuse field on the other hand are far more open minded.
The view I get from them, is "for God's sake, try anything that works!!"
"Even with respect to published diagnostic and treatment procedures for any number of
diseases, its quite clear that what is practiced at the University levels by the Clinical
Professors takes an average of five years or more to filter down to the MDs.
"A good example of this is the use of therapeutic head-out water immersion. We have studied
immersion physiology for years. Water baths are used widely throughout Europe and Japan
for therapy. Immersion is an excellent method for causing salt and water elimination in
pregnancy. Salt and water can be eliminated via immersion of the mother without having to
give drugs that affect the fetus. However, simply sitting in a warm bathtub for 20 minutes, is
not promoted by physicians here in the US, primarily because its a procedure
they can't bill for.
"I hope this letter will help educate a lot of MDs."
