He didn't have any of the classic alcoholic behaviors, except perhaps for anxiety and using
alcohol as a sleeping aid. When a routine blood test showed damage to his liver, he
started to become concerned.
When several doctors told him there was 3/8" between his brain and his skull (where
brain mass had been destroyed,) that really got his attention.
Then they added that his brain's gray matter was actually quite pink. They thought it
was funny.
He was shocked when they said, "Doesn't everyone know that alcohol destroys brain
mass?"
He replied, "I don't think so!"
He had never heard that before, and wondered how much other science was

The Internet was new then (1995-6) and the more he looked, the more he found. There
